A rare neurologic disease characterized by lethargy, hypotonia, poor feeding, opisthotonus, and a typical high-pitched cry due to bilirubin accumulation in the globus pallidus, sub-thalamic nuclei, and other brain regions, resulting from severe neonatal unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Onset of symptoms is typically within the first three to five days of life. Additional features include fever, apnea, seizures, and coma. Respiratory failure or refractory seizures may lead to a fatal outcome. |

A rare neurologic disease characterized by the chronic consequences of bilirubin toxicity in the globus pallidus, sub-thalamic nuclei, and other brain regions, after exposure to high levels of unconjugated bilirubin in the neonatal period. Symptoms begin after the acute phase of bilirubin encephalopathy in the first year of life, evolve slowly over several years, and include mild to severe extrapyramidal disturbances (especially dystonia and athetosis), auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder, and oculomotor and dental abnormalities. |

A rare genetic neurological disorder characterized by severe pseudo-TORCH syndrome with signs of brain damage and occasionally systemic manifestations resembling the sequelae of congenital infection, but in the absence of an infectious agent. Characteristic features include microcephaly, white matter disease, cerebral atrophy, cerebral hemorrhage, and calcifications, among others. Affected individuals typically have seizures and respiratory insufficiency and die in infancy. |

A rare, hereditary inborn error of metabolism characterized by an acute onset of encephalopathy in infancy or early childhood. Apart from these episodic acute events, the disorder shows a relatively benign course. Multiple metabolic abnormalities are present, including metabolic acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, hypoglycemia, increased serum lactate and alanine. |

A rare autoimmune encephalitis involving the mesial temporal lobes and clinically characterised by subacute onset (rapid progression of less than three months) of short-term memory deficits, seizures or psychiatric symptoms, such as behavioural changes, anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Further diagnostic criteria are bilateral abnormalities restricted to the mesial temporal lobes in brain MRI, cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis and/or epileptic or slow-wave activity involving the temporal lobes in EEG, and reasonable exclusion of alternative causes. Paraneoplastic or non-paraneoplastic antibodies against neuronal antigens may be found in serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid. |

A rare infectious disease characterized by severe non-purulent encephalitis caused by Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1). Patients present with fever, headache, malaise, and fatigue, followed a few days later by nausea, confusion and disorientation, and psychomotor slowing. Ataxia, aphasia, dyspnea, multifocal myoclonic jerks, and paraplegia have been described. The condition is very often fatal after progress to lethargy, deteriorating brain stem reflexes, and coma. Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid reveals moderate lympho-monocytic pleocytosis and presence of BoDV-1 RNA. |

A rare autoimmune encephalitis characterized by various phenotypes depending on the region of the brainstem that is involved; patients present with gaze palsies (in midbrain involvement), facial palsy or vertical gaze palsies (in pontine involvement), dysarthria, dysphagia or central hypoventilation (in medullary involvement). Additional clinical features may also involve pyramidal symptoms and gait impairment. |
